Illari Difficulty - Hard
Relative to all Overwatch 2 heroes, Illari is Hard to be effective with.
Illari seems like an easy support. Throw down a Healing Pylon and it automatically heals your teammates. This is not the case.
A Healing Pylon will heal your teammates without you having to actively do anything, but that's only if the enemy team doesn't destroy it. It's crucial to place Healing Pylons in hard to see (and hard to shoot) places. Without an active Healing Pylon, you can't do much healing with Illari because her secondary fire heals only last a short while.
To be effective with Illari, you also need to do a lot of damage to enemies. One could argue that Illari is essentially a DPS that happens to be able to heal teammates. Unlike some other supports, her Solar Rifle requires strong aim to damage enemies.
Illari Tier Rating - B-tier
We rate Illari as a B-tier Support hero in the current Overwatch 2 meta (among possible tiers of S, A, B, C, and D).
Illari is suitable if your team stays in one area and can be healed by her Healing Pylon and short-range Solar Rifle healing, but this is rarely how Overwatch is played in the current meta. The reality is that your team will usually play highly mobile Heroes whom Illari will struggle to heal.
It's unfortunate that Illari's base abilities aren't better with the current meta Heroes because she's fun to play, and her ultimate ability, Captive Sun, allows you to rack up eliminations.

Illari Tips
- Illari plays a lot like a 3rd DPS who also has the ability to heal teammates. As Illari, you should generally be looking to damage enemies and let your Pylon do the healing. However, if an ally is critical, heal them with your secondary fire if possible.
- Place Illari's Healing Python out of sight from enemies. It's generally better to put it higher than lower.
- If you're shooting at a full-health enemy with Illari's primary fire, wait until her Solar Rifle is fully charged.
- Before using her Ultimate Ability Captive Sun, try to wait until your enemies use abilities that could nullify its effects (Kiriko Suzu, Zarya Barriers, Moira Fade, etc.). With that said, don't hold your Ult too long.
- While it can be tempting to hold out for a play of the game worthy Captive Sun Ultimate, it's better to use it for one elimination than hold onto it too long.
